After being thwarted to a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, where
Chris Wood's late leveler offset Bernardo Silva's magnificent opening
goal, Manchester City lost distance on rival Premier League championship
contenders Arsenal.
Due to a remarkable second-half comeback by Steve Cooper's team, who
scored their only goal with six minutes left, City appeared to be
returning to the top spot after Silva's single moment of brilliance in the
41st minute.
Arsenal overtook City in the race for the title earlier in the day by
coming from behind twice to defeat Aston Villa. The Gunners now have a
two-point lead with a game remaining.
Erling Haaland attempted to refute previous criticisms that he does not
match City's playing style by hitting the crossbar and then shooting the
rebound aimlessly over in the second half, but the wasteful visitors
were only able to eke out a single point despite their overwhelming
advantage.
It is unclear how significant these two lost points would be in the
battle for the Premier League championship, but Pep Guardiola said he
was "sad and frustrated" not to have taken advantage of the game's huge
momentum.
City's string of missed opportunities, including two from Haaland, proved particularly costly when Wood appeared at the back post to tap home Morgan Gibbs-White's low cross in the 84th minute.
The draw takes the shine off City's midweek win, after getting the better of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal at the Emirates to gain a foothold at the top, only to be pegged back by the league's 13th-placed side three days later.
